Catching A Thrown Ball

  1. Your ready position to catch a thrown ball should be to have your feet shoulder-width apart, your knees slightly bent and relaxed. Your arms should be relaxed with your hands in front of your body and your glove ready.
  2. Catch the ball with your body behind the ball whenever possible, and catch with two hands whenever possible. Your elbows should be slightly bent when catching the ball.
  3. If the ball is thrown to either side you must move your feet and get your body in front of the ball. Move your feet and get in front of the ball whenever possible instead of reaching for the ball with your glove.
  4. Catch the ball in the pocket of your glove and not deep in the web or the ball will tend to get stuck in your glove. Use the web only on bad throws.
  5. If the ball is above your waist your fingers should be pointing upward when you catch the ball. If the ball is below your waist then the fingers should be pointing down. On low throws, both hands should go down for the catch and you should bend at your knees.

Catching and throwing should be practiced everyday as they are the most important skills in softball.
