Coaching the Bases

In softball there’s a coach at first base and at third base when your team is up (or on offense). Both coaches play an important role in a softball game and are the ones that inform the runner of the situation, the play, the outs, and whether or not they should continue running or stop where they are.

First Base Coach Responsibilities:
  • Is responsible for the runner from home to second.
  • Lets the batter-runner know if the ball went to the outfield on the left side of the infield.
  • Helps the runner at first with his/her leadoff.
  • Reminds the runner to watch the third base coach for the signal and to determine if he/she should continue running to third base.
  • Reminds the player of the number of outs.
  • Reminds the player of the situation.
  • Watches for the second baseman for any possible pickoff plays.
Third Base Coach Responsibilities:
  • Gives signals to the hitter and runner
  • Helps runner on second with his/her lead.
  • Lets runners at second and third know the situation.
  • Is responsible for a runner going from second to home and from first to third.
