DAY ONE OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SEES RAIN AND GOOSE EGGS
2002-07-26

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN -- The first day of play in the ISF Women’s World Championship seemed to be headed for the home stretch until Mother Nature stepped in.

The first six games of the day all got played, with action then pausing for the Opening Ceremonies. However, they ended under dark clouds and wind, before heavy rains then came down, rendering the fields unplayable for the last two contests. As a result, the two games – Chinese Taipei vs. Canada and Japan vs. New Zealand – have been rescheduled for Sunday and Monday mornings.

The day had opened with a close game as the Netherlands Antilles edged the Czech Republic, 2-1. Australia then had their way with the Dominican Republic, 10-0. Another shutout was then posted as Puerto Rico blanked South Africa 4-0. And Venezuela outlasted the Netherlands, 5-3, before the United States held off Italy, 2-0 in the last game prior to the Opening Ceremonies taking place.
