2003-07-02

Plant City Stadium and the Randy L. Larson Softball Fourplex at the International Softball Federation’s world headquarters off I-4 exit 22 in Plant City, Florida are about to buzz with activity for six straight days.

The II Jr. Girls’ World Cup takes place from Tuesday, July 8 to Sunday, July 13, with 30 teams representing eight different countries set to participate. Teams from as close as Tampa itself and as far away as places like Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, the Philippines, the Ukraine, and Venezuela will all showcase their talents in a 16-and-under fast pitch competition that is the highest internationally for that age group.

Tuesday’s activity will start with a Softball Skills Festival from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon, consisting of events such as a home run hitting contest, fastest pitch, and more. Later, Opening Ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m., immediately followed by one game on each of the five fields.

A multitude of games will take place over the course of the next four days. On Wednesday and Thursday, games will start at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day with the last scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday there’s even more action packed in, with games again starting at 9 a.m. and going until the last ones scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The two final games will be played on Sunday. The bronze medal game will start at 10 a.m. and the gold medal game will follow, beginning at 1 p.m.

ADMISSION TO THE GAMES IS FREE! There will be a small fee for parking only.
