2003-07-13
In the gold medal game, Chinese Taipei jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of their first three batters getting on base. But in the fourth inning, Lilburn centerfielder Hope Howell smashed a home run
to center field that also scored Lisa Norris who had singled to start the
inning. The tie didn’t last long as left fielder Erin Birdsong, who reached
base on an error to start the top of the fifth inning, scored when Norris
doubled.
Earlier, in the bronze medal game, Team FLA broke open a scoreless game in a
big way, getting four runs in the top of the sixth inning and then five more in
the top of the seventh to down the Philippines, 9-1.
Earlier in the day, Lilburn advanced to the gold medal game by defeating Team
FLA 3-2 in eleven innings. Chinese Taipei clinched a spot in the gold medal
game when they defeated the Philippines 7-0 in a game resumed from Saturday
night (rain).
Two other games were played this morning, continued from last night. The T-
Birds beat the Rock N Fire (Manassas, Virginia), 3-0, and Team FLA downed the
(San Luis Obispo) California Cruisers, 5-1.
