SOME CLOSE GAMES,
SOME UNBEATEN TEAMS
2003-07-09 Five games were played in each of the five pools today, with the same in store for tomorrow. A total of 30 teams are participating, representing a total of eight different countries. The event is 16-and-under fast pitch, and first took place in November of 2001.
The Tampa Spartans (Tampa, Florida) are the class of Pool A thus far, winning
each of their three games – all played today – by two runs. They edged
Stacey’s Stars (Jacksonville, Florida) 2-0, the SF Contenders–VG from Miami,
Florida, 4-2, and the Road Runners (McAllen, Texas) 7-5. The Pool gets a new
wrinkle tomorrow as the schedule had been adjusted today to compensate for the delay in the arrival of the Philippines team (visa problems).
Pool B had a ten-inning game today as the Lilburn T-Birds (Lilburn, Georgia)
went to 2-0 with a 4-3 win over Chinese Taipei (see photo above). Earlier in
the day Chinese Taipei had been on the winning end of a one-run game, 6-5 over the Nitro Girlz (Royal Palm Beach, Florida).
There’s a mirror image of those playing in Pool C, where three of the teams are
2-0 and the other three are 0-2. Two of the unbeatens will square off tomorrow
at 1 p.m. (the Tampa Mustangs vs. the Rock N Fire from Manassas, Virginia).
In Pool D there is already only one team left that hasn’t lost yet. The
Sarasota (Florida) Quicksilver, 1-0 winners on Tuesday night, beat the
(Kingsville) Texas Rage today, 3-1.
And in Pool E, the Jacksonville (Florida) Storm had their hitting shoes on
today, winning both of their games by a combined score of 21-2. Keeping pace
though are the SWF Scream (Fort Myers, Florida), who won twice today, 2-0 and
16-0.
Play continues tomorrow morning with five games all starting at 9 a.m. The
rest of the day will see (five) games (each) at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5
p.m. The action is in Plant City Stadium and the adjacent Randy L. Larson
Softball Fourplex.
The event is free and open to the public. Only a small fee for parking is
being charged.
