Taking nothing away from teams like A.F. Masonry, Great Britain1, and Tampa Bay Fishery, the Clan Softball team from Scotland is looking like the pace-setter after two days of play at the International Softball Federation’s (ISF) II Slow Pitch World Cup. Heading into the final day of play (Monday), Clan Softball is now undefeated with a 5-0 won-lost record, with an offense averaging over 16 runs a game and a defense that’s allowing just under five.

Whether or not the Scottish team’s success continues will quickly be learned as they take the field tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against a Great Britain1 team that comes in with an overall won-lost record thus far of 5-1. A Great Britain team won the 1st Slow Pitch World Cup (2002), and with the other G.B. team entered in this year’s event not even playing .500 ball, the pressure is clearly on GB1 to “defend the title.”

This year’s tournament’s two U.S. entries, both from the host state, are faring well so far. A.F. Masonry, a team based in Plant City where the event is being played and the ISF has its headquarters, finished their Sunday games with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie against the resurgent Cayman Islands team to head into Monday with a 4-1 record. And, Tampa Bay Fishery (Lakeland, FL) is scheduled to play them tomorrow morning at 9:00, bringing with them a 5-1 record, thanks to a 9-1 rout of Nassau Four (Bahamas) this evening.

The Cayman Islands team merits mention after a discouraging first day that saw them go 0-3, then rebounding with three wins today before the dramatic loss to A.F. Masonry.

Free and open to the public, the event is taking place in Plant City Stadium and the Randy L. Larson Softball Fourplex.
