A three-peat may be in the making for the Australian "Aussie Colts."
The Australia representatives sit at 4-0 (won-lost) following two wins Sunday at the ISF VII Junior Men's World Championship (19-and-under) at Queen Elizabeth Park's VIV Field in Summerside, Prince Edward Island (Canada).
Day three action saw Mexico rally for a 7-5 win over Argentina; Australia blank the Czech Republic 7-0; the USA give up a one-run lead and lose, 2-1, to New Zealand; Australia topped Argentina, 5-2, and Japan three-hit Team Canada for a thrilling 3-0 win before 1,200 fans.
Starting the day off, Mexico rallied over an Argentina squad that seemed to become tight and nervous as the game went on.
Leading the Mexican charge was Daniel Manchena (2-for-4, two runs scored, two RBI), Jorge Avila (2-for-3, double, run scored, RBI), Gustavo Benitez (1-for-4, double, RBI), and Jesus Barrerra (2-for-4, two RBI).
For Argentina, Francisco Regoli (2-for-3, run scored), Federico Eder (1-for-3, two runs scored, RBI), and German Sacks (1-for-3, RBI, stolen base) led the way.
Winning pitcher Sergio de la Rosa went a third of an inning, allowing two runs on one hit and walking one. Carlos Lopez went two and two thirds innings, giving up three runs on three hits and walking one. Ruben Delgadillo went four strong innings allowing just two hits, walking one and striking out two.
Losing pitcher Max Montero went two and one third innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two. Starter Nelson Ruiz Diaz went three and a third innings, allowing four runs and six hits, walking two and fanning six. Sacks pitched a third of an inning in relief, allowing one hit.
In the second game of the day Sunday, Australia scored three in the first inning, two in the second, and one each in the fourth and fifth to earn the win over the Czech Republic behind five solid innings from winning pitcher Ryan Van Coevorden. The game was called after five innings due to the run rule.
Van Coevorden broke out of a slump on Friday to help Aussies to a win, and this time he did it on the slab, scattering five hits and striking out one in throwing just 56 pitches.
Leading the Aussies at the plate was Shaun Mason (2-for-2, triple, three runs scored), Matt Torpey (1-for-2), and Damien Nairn (1-for-1).
For the Czech Republic, Michal Pyszko (2-for-2), Bohumir Adamec (1-for-2), Jan Pospisil (1-for-2), and Michal Hudec (1-for-2) led the way.
Losing pitcher Stepan Eret lasted just one and one third innings, allowing five runs on two hits and walking five. Ondrej Malecek went three and two third innings, allowing two runs on two hits walking one and fanning two.
Elsewhere, Team USA pitcher John Kelly seemed to have control problems in the bottom of the seventh inning and New Zealand took advantage, scoring both of their runs in a 2-1 win off singles by Mario Herbert (1-for-3, stolen base) and Brett Tibbitts (1-for-3) in the third game of the day before an estimated 450 fans.
Other top batters for the Kiwis included Matt Telfer (2-for-3, run scored) and Bernard Hale (1-for-3, stolen base).
For the United States, Curtis Leavitt (1-for-2) scored the lone run on a home run, while Bobby Olson (2-for-3), Brandon Huerta (1-for-2), and Jason Loe (1-for-4) were also tops at the plate.
Winning pitcher Penese Iosefo went two and two third innings, allowing two hits, walking one, and striking out six. Starter Vaero Hagai went four and one third innings, giving up one run on five hits, walking one and fanning four.
Losing pitcher John Kelly went the distance, allowing two runs on a mere five hits, walking four and sitting down three.
Travis Southam had a double and triple to key Australia's 5-2 win over Argentina. Southam went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Adam Folkard whizzed the ball past 15 Argentina batters, striking them out, allowing two runs on three hits while walking three.
Also leading the Aussies was Shaun Mason (1-for-4, run scored, two RBI), James Brooks (1-for-4, double, RBI), Nick Norton (1-for-2), and Adam Raptis (1-for-3, run scored, stolen base).
For Argentina, Manuel Mata Carabajal (1-for-2, run scored), German Sacks (1-for-3, run scored), and Jose Nicolas Milazzo (1-for-1, two RBI, two stolen bases) were tops.
Losing pitcher Mauricio Boss went six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, walking three and fanning three. Sacks pitched an inning in relief, allowing one hit.
And in today’s other game, Hayami Takahashi gave up just three hits while fanning nine Canadian batters, and Takuto Tsutsui went 3-for-4 with all the offense Japan would need in a solo home run in the fourth inning in a 3-0 win. He added two RBI in the game.
Other top batters were Norihiko Aoyama (2-for-3), Shigeru Higashi (1-for-4, run scored), and Koji Ito (1-for-4).
Jonathan Kane (1-for-3, double) appeared to tie the game for Canada in the bottom of the sixth inning with a long, well hit ball, but it was determined that the ball hit under the plastic on the outfield fence and stayed inside the park. Other top hitters were Justin Gill (1-for-3) and Bobby Sill (1-for-3).
Losing pitcher Tyson Barkman went the distance, allowing eight hits for three runs, and walking three while striking out ten.
