Tomorrow in Thailand the 24th Southeast Asian Games begin. The multisport event takes place every two years and both men’s & women’s softball (fast pitch) are on the programme, with those games beginning on Saturday.
Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand will participate in the men’s softball competition. The Philippines are the defending SEA Games champs, having defeated Indonesia, 3-2, at the event two years ago in Manila. The men’s team from the Philippines was the silver medalist 13 months ago in Japan at the 8th Asian Men’s Softball Championship, where Indonesia won the bronze, with fellow 2007 SEA Games participants Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore having come in fifth, sixth, and seventh place, respectively.
On the women’s side, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand will make up the 2007 SEA Games competition. At the 23rd edition of this event two years ago in Manila, the Philippines won the gold medal with a convincing 8-0 victory over Indonesia. Three months ago Indonesia finished tied for fifth at the 9th Asian Women’s Championship, which they hosted. The Philippines came in fourth place while Singapore and Thailand were tied for seventh at the ten-team event.
The 2007 SEA Games softball competition will run through and including December 13, with all games being played at Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University.
