ZAMBIA SET TO HOST TOURNEY, CLINIC
2007-04-30

Zambia is set to kick off their summer season by hosting the annual Zone Six Championship Series this coming weekend (May 4–6). The tournament, held this year in Lusaka at Baobob College, will feature four different participating countries, including Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Zambia has not hosted this annual men’s and women’s fast pitch competition since 1988, when it took place in the city of Ndola. The tournament’s hosting privileges are routed throughout the ten countries that are within zone six of Africa. Last year Botswana played host. Both Botswana’s men’s and women’s teams will be defending their title of Zone Six Champions at this year’s competition. Alongside spectators and media, Zambia’s Olympic Committee Executive will be in attendance at this year’s series.

Just over a week after the tournament ends, Zambia will hold another softball activity. Complementing the tournament will be a beginner coaching clinic from May 15–22, also held in Lusaka. Hosted by the Zambia Softball Association (ZSA), the course will feature instructions by International Softball Federation (ISF) clinician Mona Stevens on crucial softball skills for beginning players, such as catching, batting, baserunning, and pitching. Stevens is being sent to Zambia by the ISF in order to provide expert instruction to beginning players who want to participate in the sport.

The ZSA continues to put efforts into building and promoting the development of the sport of softball in its country. These competitions and clinics help further their goals of development not only locally, but internationally as well.
